STATE Representative Candidates NEEDED
If you value Democracy, public education, LGBTQ equality and women's reproductive rights, we need you. As a State Representative you will be able to advocate for your Derry Constituents for legislative changes that are fair, equitable, and uphold the State & Federal Constitutions. You don't need to know everything to support your values.
If you are a registered voter, at least 18 year old, have lived in NH for at least the last 2 years and live in Derry, then you are qualified to be a candidate to be one of Derry's 10 State Representatives. If you are currently registered as undeclared, you must switch your registration to Democrat by June 4 to run as a Democrat. The filing period is June 5-14, 2024 for a $2 fee. You can register at the Derry Town Clerk's office or Secretary of State's office June 5-13, but on the last day (June 14) registration must be done at the Secretary of State's office.
State Representatives also need the flexibility in their schedule to be able to go to Concord while the NH House is in session (January to June) during their 2 year term. The number of times a week you need to go to Concord would depend on the committee you are apointed to with some committees having higher work loads than others. Committees usually meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the full House meets most Thursdays while the House is in session.
Members of the Legislature receive a stipend of $200 for their two year term, and are reimbursed for their travel expenses between their home and Concord. New Hampshire takes pride in being a frugal state, Legislative pay was last changed in 1889. Members of the Legislature have the option of purchasing a special legislative license plate, and they receive free tolls when displaying the legislative plate. This is essentially a volunteer position for civic minded people who want to have a positive impact for New Hampshire.
If you have questions, we can help with answers. If you or someone you know is thinking about running, we would love to talk with you. If you decide to run, there are lots of resources we can help you with your campaign. You are welcome to put as much or as little effort into your campaign as works for you and we will help you.
